The folks behind the counter

Independently owned. Not a chain.

River Beverage is owned by John Vaughn. That's him with the River Beverage sign. John and his team run a small, independently owned shop on the Lincoln Highway, with a solid selection and friendly staff behind the counter.

River Lore

They burned a bridge here once.
We'd rather you just stop in.

Wrightsville isn't just a spot on the map. It's one of the most storied river crossings in America, and River Beverage sits right on the road that tells the story.

  1. 1729

John Wright settles the west bank

Settlers led by John Wright put down roots along the Susquehanna at a spot Native American communities had long used to cross the river. The town still carries his name.

  2. 1733

    Wright's Ferry opens

With a patent in hand, Wright started running a ferry across the river. Roads grew on both banks, linking Philadelphia and Lancaster to York and Maryland.

  3. 1789

    Almost the nation's capital

In the country's earliest days, the Wrightsville–Columbia crossing was seriously considered as the site for America's capital. Imagine the Capitol dome overlooking Lake Clarke.

  4. 1814

    The first great bridge

A covered bridge more than a mile long spanned the river. High water and ice took it out in 1832, and a new covered bridge replaced it in 1834.

  5. 1840

    The canal to the world

The Susquehanna & Tidewater Canal connected Wrightsville to Havre de Grace, and from there all the way to Liverpool, England. A flood finally closed it in 1894.

  6. June 28, 1863

    The night the river burned

During the Gettysburg Campaign, Confederate troops under Gen. John B. Gordon pushed into Wrightsville, trying to cross toward Lancaster, Harrisburg and Philadelphia. The Union militia set fire to the world's longest covered bridge to stop them. The wind carried the flames into town, and Gordon's own soldiers formed a bucket brigade to help save it. This is as far east as the Confederate army ever got in Pennsylvania.

  7. 1913

    The Lincoln Highway

The old ferry roads became part of the Lincoln Highway, America's first coast-to-coast road. Our address is on it: 6436 Lincoln Hwy.

  8. 1930

    Veterans Memorial Bridge

Dedicated on Armistice Day, the concrete arch bridge was the longest of its kind in the world when it was finished. It's a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and it still carries traffic across the river today.

  9. Today

    River Beverage keeps it cold

Three centuries of travelers have come through this crossing. We're here for the ones who need a case on the way home.

Make a river day of it

Stock the cooler, then go explore.

Enjoy the river

Lake Clarke and the Susquehanna are minutes away. Spend the day on the water, then stop in on the way home to stock up for the evening.

Walk the history

Stand where the bridge burned, cross the 1930 Veterans Memorial Bridge, and look for the historical markers around town.

Cookout on the way home

We're right on Route 462 (Lincoln Hwy) between York and the river, so it's an easy stop heading either way.
